New Music – Mutineers

I recently came into contact with an amazing new band that I have to share with the world. The Manchester band Mutineers found me on Twitter, I checked them out and a couple of messages later I’m sending them interview questions for the site. They remind me of all the music I love from The Smiths, Suede, Geneva, to newer English bands like Chapel Club and The Courteeners. With that, here are some words from Mutineers:

Hearing your band, I recognize a lot of possible influences, especially The Smiths. What bands have had the biggest impact on your music?
Yeah, we like the Smiths but i wouldn’t say they’re the strongest influence of all..although Iwan (Bass Player) has worked with Johnny Marr in the past so some of his style is bound to rub off…we also love a lot of the other cool 80s bands, Cure, Bunnymen…New Order. But also love all sorts of other stuff…Bowie, Radiohead….The National…
We found each other on Twitter, what has social media done for the band and how are you planning on using it for your inevitable world takeover?
More than anything it’s given us the chance to commuicate with people that feel an affinity with the music that we’re making, especially on a lyrical level it’s very humbling to see people getting off on the words and quoting them back to us, making fan videos and artwork, stuff like that – i guess it’s sort of an old fashioned thing that doesn’t maybe happen so much anymore, since the likes of Manic Street Preachers or indeed maybe even The Smiths…it feels in a way that we’re being willed on by a lot of people to achieve a lot more which is a nice place to be in.
What English bands do you love right now that we might not know about in the States?
A lot of people are getting off on The Tribes record at the moment..and some of the lovely female voices, in particular Ren Harvieu…the funny thing is though that there are American “versions” of these artists both on the edge of commercial success at the moment here in England…Lana Del Ray, Howler…
Do you have plans to tour the US?
We’d love to if somebody offered us the shows and paid us enough of a fee to enable us to get over, play and not live in squalor!
Final words for America?
You lot all have too much blood in your caffeine systems.

Check out the song “Shadow Kisses”, and look for the album Friends, Lovers, Rivals on iTunes.

Video Diary #2 – When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Here’s the second in my video diary series, this time from January. I’m hoping to shoot more video soon but it’s so random when the occasion arises that I never know what’s going to inspire me to take out my phone and shoot, but that’s what I think is so great about this. Another fun thing that happened is that I didn’t know the name of the tune played on the street but I knew there was a “hurrah hurrah” in the lyrics. I Googled “hurrah hurrah lyrics” and that led me to “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” from the late 1800′s. Naturally I had to make that the title of the video. I wonder what February will bring…

Sketchy Structures Stormtroopers

One of Wokay’s Top 6 Awesome Online HTML5 Tools is Jay Weeks’ Sketchy Structures drawing tool, which I used for the stormtrooper drawings above. They were each done on the first try and the only thing done in Photoshop was cropping the images so we don’t see a ton of empty white space. I can’t say enough how much I love this drawing tool and I’m sure I’ll be using it again in the near future.

The Whiskey Water Trick

I saw this over on Foodbeast today and had to share. There’s some fun science involving water vs. alcohol density as it’s demonstrated here with a couple of shot glasses and a playing card.

Father John Misty – Hollywood Forever Cemetary Sings

Alexi Wasser of imboycrazy.com just tweeted about a new video that she’s in for Father John Misty, aka Josh Tillman formerly of Fleet Foxes. It’s an awesome mellow psych song called “Hollywood Forever Cemetary Sings” that is a refreshing sound to hear post Fleet Foxes. It’s also really great to see Aubrey Plaza go nuts and tear shit up (literally) with a very satisfying and a bit uncomfortable end to the video. Enjoy.

La Senza Photo Shoot – F/W2011

It’s Monday. What’s better inspiration to start the week than lingerie models? Here’s a very well produced video showing off the La Senza Fall/Winter 2011 line of lingerie. Since it’s still January and it’s cold and this weather has been insane in Chicago this season, let’s just seal the deal and ensure a great week with Brooklyn Decker’s Winter 2011/12 video also for La Senza.

Christmas Lights Video Diary

Here’s the first of what I hope to be many monthly video diaries. I’m planning to shoot them all on my phone but that might not always be the case. This one is from December 2011 and showcases the mad skillz of the T-Mobile G2X video camera in all its full 1080p glory.

Karme Boixadera

It’s not often that I’m stopped dead in my tracks by somebody on TV but it happened today. Looking at the bills I recieved in the mail, I looked up and saw Karme Boixadera in the new Amazon Kindle ad. Once I recovered from how stunningly beautiful she is I naturally Google’d “who is the girl in the amazon kindle fire commercial”. I was instantly led to the amazing Tumblr Who is that hot ad girl? and Karme Boixadera’s own Tumblr site. Wow. I don’t think this is the last we’ll see of Karme around here that’s for sure.
