Joe Padilla art

My friend Joe Padilla is a pretty talented artist who I’ve known for about 10 years. He recently started a blog called Rectory where he’s posting his artwork so I thought I’d share. His drawings are beautifully meaty and inky and if the subjects were to move I’m sure they’d be quite jiggly as well. There’s a nostalgia to them that I really like too. Check it out for yourself here and subscribe to his RSS feed. You can never have enough art in your life.

RIP Robert Breer

One of my favorite artist passed away recently. Robert Breer died at the age of 84. In school when I saw his films, especially Fuji I had one of those moments where I got it. A light bulb went off over my head. Angels sang. I saw the light. It all made sense. After that I bought up thousands of 4×6 index cards and got to work. The New York Times has a nice article about Breer right here. After losing Lucian Freud a few weeks ago, and now Breer it’s been a sad year for the art world.

The Naked and Famous – The Sun

Found this slightly NSFW but beautiful video on Design You Trust today by The Naked and Famous. I would write more but I have to get this project done at work.

Brett Anderson – Brittle Heart

Brett Anderson’s new video for the song Brittle Heart premiered on NME.com yesterday. It’s a well shot band performance of the type of beautiful love song song only Brett Anderson can do.
For more of Brett Anderson check out his site here and Suede’s site here.

PANIC! returns August 27th

That’s right, PANIC! is back and there’s a shiny new Helvetica flyer to prove it. Pogo won’t be with us as he’ll be traveling the world but I’ll be joined by guest DJ’s Misa and Dom Kreep from the amazing band Kreeps. Misa’s going to play her favourite soul, mod, britpop, and whatever else she wants. Dom will surprise the fuck out of us, and he’s now a Chicago resident after leaving Manchester a few months ago. I’m pretty damn excited about PANIC! and I hope anybody reading this can make it out.

Ivy is back!

There’s nothing like good news on a Sunday, or any day for that matter. I just found out that the band Ivy is back with a new single called Fascination and a new album coming out in September. Hopefully a US tour will follow soon after.

The song Distant Lights is on the new album too.

Chicago Comic Con 2011

I spent a fun afternoon today at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con. Running on just about 6 hours of sleep after my DJ gig at Three Aces last night I met friends for breakfast and an afternoon of awesome. I nearly cried at seeing the beauty of the 60′s Batmobile up close after all these years and I saw lots of great costumes and art in Artist Alley. The booths selling comics, toys, movies, etc.. were great as always. I scored a DVD of Electric Dragon 80,000V that comes with a soundtrack CD for $15. Not bad at all.
Below are my photos of everything from the beautiful Gina Lee Nolan being checked out by R2D2 and a zombie comic book artist we befriended towards the end of the day. The Star Wars costume people were great at photo ops as well as the female Master Chief. Also worth mentioning was the coolness of seeing Peter Tork of the Monkees in person and Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca walk right past me being escorted by a Stormtrooper (of course). The killer steampunk DJ mixer was handmade by my friend Joe Vourteque of Steampunk Chicago who had a booth there as well. Good times. Can’t wait for next year!

Sulk – Wishes

I have found the song of the summer and it’s called Wishes, and it’s by a new british band called Sulk. I was introduced to them on Facebook when a friend posted a link on Tuesday and it’s been on repeat since then. I love the freshness of it and how it sounds like some long lost Madchester band from 1992 who may have played shows with the Charlatans and Stone Roses. The very well shot and edited video is also fantastic. I love the super 8 film and all it’s scratches and light flares. I can’t wait to hear more of this band.

UPDATE
AUGUST 20, 2011
Apparently I have heard more of this band, as their previous name The Ruling Class that I posted about here in 2010.

Parklife – August 19th

Here’s the flyer for this month’s parklife! Last month was amazing, and I hope to continue the momentum. If you’re reading this in the Chicagoland area, come dance with us!

Poster by Liam Montgomery at NÂș1 Cooperative.
We also just started a Facebook page for parklife. “Like” us and keep up to date on all things parklife at Lucky Number Grill. Adding an actual Like box code from Facebook seemed too easy even after I tried BOTH different codes that it offered. Jerks. Follow the link here.

New Diana Photos

I finally got around to using the last of the color film I bought at the Lomography store in LA last summer and these are some of photos. I had time to kill after work on Monday before a meeting so I walked over to the River East building, then to where the river meets the lake at Mc Clurg Ct. I definitely want to shoot more with the Diana before the end of summer and when I do they’ll be up here on the site.
